Zandra Rhodes: Special Inks for Special Prints
MagnaColours® spoke to Zandra Rhodes’ studio about the use of MagnaPrint® water-based inks in their process to create iconic designs which have graced the international fashion scene since the Sixties.
In the heart of Bermondsey, London, next to the striking pink and orange building of the Fashion and Textile Museum, is high-end fashion designer Zandra Rhodes’ fabulous studio. It’s only fitting that this creative space, where for years bold and dramatic but graceful designs have been created and printed, sits next to the museum which Zandra founded herself in 2003.
Since the Sixties, Zandra Rhodes’ prints and garments have graced the international fashion scene. She was one of a new wave of British designers that put London on the map at the forefront of fashion, with royalty, celebrities and rock stars alike adorning Zandra’s designs. The list is full of icons, from Freddie Mercury and Debbie Harry to Kylie Minogue and Diana, Princess of Wales.
It was clear at London Fashion Week Festival in February 2018 that her ideas and creativity are as strong as ever, with stunning and imaginative print collections still being produced in her studio, which specialises in hand screen-printed couture garments.
MagnaColours® spoke to Zandra’s studio Print Room Manager, Claire Parlby about the use of MagnaPrint® water-based inks in their process to create these iconic designs.
“We handle everything in-house, from initial design, to colour sampling, final construction and print production.”
“Our signature material is screen printed silk chiffon with Magna’s inks creating a range of transparent, opaque and metallic effects. Our staple MagnaPrint® products include Base FF, HB Range and Matt Lacquer.”
“We love using the MagnaPrint® Bling range because the inks produce great effects especially on the silk chiffon fabrics. As it’s so glittery the pigments catch the light and really sparkle.”
“For a recent scarf collection, we used Bling and opaque pastes on opaque and sheer fabrics, they produced lovely, vivid colours and eye-catching glitters on the finished product.”
